Since a few years we are buying coffee from the Matias and his father Johel Monge. And for sure they have a reputation in Costa Rica. They have been Cup of excellence winners for the first time a few years ago with their first plantation. Meanwhile they were growing coffee in a new area, higher up. There they are mainly growing Geisha and Catuai. We visit them every other year.
This year, 2023, Tom planned to visit them as he was also judging the Cup of excellence competition in Costa Rica. We knew they were participating too. But of course the competition is a blind competition, judges have no idea which samples they are cupping.
It was a huge but nice surprise to discover that Matias and his father Johel won the first place.
