SCA Roasting Foundation Level

This 2 day course covers everything you need to know about roasting, it enables you to create your first roast profiles and also gives you chance to enroll in the SCA Roasting Certification System (half day optional). Why choose to make this a two day course? In this way we can share about roasting and all that comes with it. From green coffee buying till production cuppings. It is important to us not just to cover the SCA Curriculum but to really let you soak in the life at the roastery.

We train in small groups with no more than 6 students.

This price includes:

  • In depth knowledge shared to you by experienced teachers. We are a company with 15 years of roasting experience and active in the specialty coffee movement since the very beginning. The course will be given by the OR Coffee Roasters Authorized Specialty Coffee (AST) Miguel Maes and Q Grader and founder of OR Coffee Roasters, Tom Janssen.
  • A plunge in the real life coffee roasting business. As the course will take place at the roastery you will be able to see and ask whatever you want.
  • Morning coffee, fruits, healthy snacks and lunch every day.
  • A cupping spoon with engraved Logo
  • Key information to enable you to do your Intermediate Level Roasting qualification that consists of a practical exam and a written exam (25 questions with a pass rate of 70% required). Successful students will be awarded 10 points towards the SCAE Coffee Diploma. !!---OPTIONAL---!!

  • Let’s roast! You start right away with sample roasting in small groups, we have two sample roaster available. You get a clear assignment and instructions to make this work.
  • Introduction in the theory of roasting, about physical changes by using samples
  • Theory: Let’s talk roasting Part 2
  • Tour the Roastery and get to know the equipment and terminology


  • Welcome and coffee
  • Why we cup? How we cup?
  • Morning cupping evaluating yesterday’s sample roasts.
  • Theory: Let’s talk roast pt. 2
  • Green Coffee Buying: Green Coffee Grading
  • Let’s Roast on a 1 kg roaster. You’ll roast to a reference color provided by the trainer. We also learn how to log a profile and calculate some key roasting values.
  • Time for a recap and goodbyes.

  • A practical roasting session where you will follow instructions for three roasts and record relevant data and observations per roast. This practical exam is designed to evaluate your ability to identify the different basic stages of coffee in a roast cycle and to accurately record relevant properties of the roasting process.
